Ruth Marcus finds inspiration for her art in the world around her. The starting point can be just a momentary glimpse, from an intimate look at a flower to a scenic vista or the architecture of an ancient town. What appeals to Ms. Marcus is the emotional impact of the colors, shapes and textures she sees. Each painting becomes a journey filled with unexpected turns. Her studio paintings of flowers and figures are guided by moments of surprise as she explores the interaction of color and form. She begins her landscapes on-site, where the continually changing light and atmosphere both challenge and delight her. Trips around the United States and to Europe, Asia and North Africa provide visual stimulation and an ever-expanding personal vocabulary. A native New Yorker, Ms. Marcus received her B.A. and M.S. from Queens College of the City University of New York. She is passionate about sharing her love of art with young people. She was co-head of the art department at the Dalton School in New York City for ten years before moving to Washington in 1989. For twenty-one years she taught art at Georgetown Day School, retiring in June, 2011. Ms. Marcus has exhibited in New York City, Berkeley, San Francisco, Maryland, Virginia, and the District of Columbia. |
